Language Arts

Welcome to Language Arts!

Please subscribe to my website and check in often. I post homework and our agenda every day.

Students have homework daily. They must read 60 minutes each and every day, including weekends. This practice will increase vocabulary, reading comprehension, and further their Accelerated Reader goal.

Feel free to contact me with questions. The BEST way to contact me is through email. Please email me at: jcosentino@erusd.org

Interactive Notebook Guidelines

Interactive Notebook Guidelines

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Interactive Notebook is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Interactive Notebooks will be used for class notes, classwork, homework, and various other activities.  You will be asked to express your own ideas and process the information presented in class. The Interactive Notebook provides evidence of understanding of material.

MATERIALS - Students must have these materials EACH AND EVERY DAY.

*Interactive Notebook (composition book)

*pens and pencils with erasers

*colored pencils
*scissors

*glue sticks (more than one)

*highlighters

INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK ORGANIZATION

Your Interactive Notebook will be organized into a left-side and right-side structure

*Right-Side: The right side for your Interactive Notebook is for Language Arts notes or other information. Your notes will be structured so that key ideas are clear. Make sure you highlight and use color to accent key ideas and headings. We only use Cornell Notes in this class. Also use COLOR. Your work should be in color using colored pencils.

*Left-Side: The left-side of your notebook will be used for a variety of activities, including homework (sometimes). This side will be the place where all of your creative and artistic ideas will be presented.  These are artifacts or evidence of acquired knowledge and is an important part of your notebook. The left-side activities will ask you to tie into your previous knowledge and feelings or ask you to demonstrate your understanding of new ideas.

INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK GRADE

Notebooks are checked regularly for accuracy and completion.

All class notes and notebook assignment should be included even for the days when the student is absent. An important part of the notebook grade is its visual appearance. The notebook is a reflection of the student and his or her learning.  It needs to be neat and well organized.

Each entry should be titled and dated. Artistic effort should be evident throughout the notebook.  Keep in mind that the notebook will count as a major grade each and every time it is graded. Put effort into it!

Preparing the Notebook:

  1. Title page - your name, class, room number, please decorate. About the Author biography here.
  2. Table of Contents pages - 4 pages are reserved for these after the title page. Put an asterisk (*) in the corner of these Table of Contents pages.
  3. Number pages 1-10 AFTER the six Table of Contents pages.  Odd numbers are on the left side. Even numbers are on the right side
  4. Cursive alphabet on the interior back cover for reference.  Woohoo! We love cursive!
  5. Use colored pencils and decorate as you like!

Welcome!

August 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Language Arts! I look forward to working with you and your child through the year as we discover reading and writing together. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached via email at jcosentino@erusd.org or by phone at North Park Academy of the Arts at (562) 801-7570.  Attached are our classroom rules and a list of supplies that students need to have daily.  Please return the Classroom Rules Contract signed by tomorrow and have supplies ready by Friday, as we will be putting together the Interactive Notebook.

Please note that I do not accept late work without an excused absence.  Excessive absences will impact a student’s grade considerably, so please have your students in class and on time

Students must write down their homework in their agendas daily.   Furthermore, students need to check my homework website every day.  Students and parents must create both a parent AND a student portal to check grades on a regular basis.

Although we do use our smartphones in class regularly, those phones must be shut off and in back packs until I allow students to take them out. We use phones for educational purposes ONLY and it is important that students follow my directions and procedures at all times. Should unauthorized use of a cell phone occur in my class, it will be confiscated and sent to the office for parent pickup. At this time, cell phone pickups are on Mondays.

Again, I look forward to working with you and your child this year.  Do not hesitate to contact me with questions.

Sincerely,

Joleene Cosentino
