Notes:

The central idea is the main idea of a nonfiction text

Ask yourself after reading text - “What am I supposed to know now?” that will be the central idea

Nonfiction = real

Central ideas can be directly stated or implied through details, and readers need to infer the central idea

Infer = logical guess

Analyze = look at closely

Summarize = restate in shorter form

Analyzing the central idea means to identify it and look closely at it using text evidence

Sample Test Questions:

*Summarize two central ideas

*Analyze the central idea

*Explain two central ideas

*There can be more than one central idea in a text

*Each central idea gets its own paragraph
